Democrats in the Arizona Legislature push to remove outdated abortion ban from the 19th century

Arizona lawmakers narrowly voted to allow a vote on repealing a near-total abortion ban in response to pressure from Democrats and President Biden. Republicans have blocked earlier repeal efforts, drawing condemnation from Biden. Arizona Republicans face pressure from conservative supporters of the ban but also swing voters. The 1864 law allowing abortions only to save the pregnant patient’s life was recently upheld by the Arizona Supreme Court. If the repeal wins final approval, a 2022 statute banning abortions after 15 weeks would become the prevailing law. Both sides are considering further abortion measures for the November ballot.
