Women's Golf Is No. 5 Seed In NCAA Auburn Regional

April 24, 2024 | Women's Golf

2024 NCAA Women's Regional Selections

The University of North Carolina women's golf team is the No. 5 seed in the NCAA Auburn Regional, to be held on May 6-8 at the Auburn University Club.

This is Carolina's third consecutive bid to play in an NCAA regional. Last season, the Tar Heels finished ninth in the Pullman, Wash., Regional.

Joining the Tar Heels in the Auburn Regional are No. 1 seed South Carolina, No. 2 Auburn, No. 3 Oregon, No. 4. Georgia, No. 6 Michigan, No. 7 Houston, No. 8 Tulsa, No. 9 Miami, No. 10 Kennesaw State, No. 11 East Tennessee State and No. 12 Albany.

The Tar Heels have won three tournaments this season (the St Andrews Links Collegiate, the UCF Challenge and the NC State Match Play Invitational) and advanced out of stroke play to the semifinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship this past weekend at Porters Neck Country Club in Wilmington, N.C.

Carolina is led by fifth-year senior and two-time All-ACC honoree Kayla Smith and sophomore Megan Streicher. Streicher leads UNC in stroke average this season at 71.13 per round, which is on pace to set the school record. Smith currently holds the single-season and career scoring records and has compiled three of the four-best single-season averages in UNC history.

Smith has two collegiate wins, including the St. Andrews Links Collegiate in Scotland in October.

Streicher has Carolina's best finish in all six tournaments in the spring, including three fourth-place finishes and a tie for 10th in the ACC Championship. Smith and Streicher both went 3-0 in leading UNC to the team title at the NC State Match Play.

The Tar Heels are looking to advance to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 2017. The top five teams and low individual not on those teams out of each regional advance to Carlsbad for the national championship, which begins May 17.
