North Andover man dead after shooting at police, officer injured

A man in North Andover who barricaded himself in a home Wednesday night fired at police officers and injured one during an hours-long standoff that ended when the man shot and killed himself hours later, authorities said.

Police responded about 9:50 p.m. after residents at 416 Waverly Road called to report that a family member was armed and “experiencing a mental health episode,” according to a statement released by the North Andover Police Department.

The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, fired at responding officers and injured one when he struck a police cruiser which resulted in “metal shards striking him in the head,” police said.

The officer was treated at Lawrence General Hospital and released, police said.

A SWAT team was called in and residents in the area were told to shelter in place.

The man refused commands to leave the home and fire rounds out the front door and rear windows of the home, police said.

Several hours later, the man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
