LAGOS – The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has suggested to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun and the Police Service Commission (PSC) the establishment and inauguration of the Police Students Relations Forum (PSRF).

According to NANS, the objective of the PSRF is to foster and enhance collaboration between students and the Nigeria Police Force.

Senator Comrade Oladimeji Uthman, Clerk of the Senate,
NANS Headquarters made the advocacy in the course of his meeting with students who were victims of Police brutality at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso which led to the death of a corps member serving at the institution while others sustained injuries.

He said recognizing the paramount importance of maintaining a safe and secure environment within educational institutions, NANS is eager to establish a constructive partnership with all law enforcement agencies, especially the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) which is more closer to the masses/citizens.

“The police play vital roles in community safety in Nigeria through crime prevention, law enforcement, and promoting peace and order in society.

“In light of this, as the national leadership of the students body in Sub-Sahara Africa (NANS), we propose the formation of Police-Students Relation Forum in collaboration with Nigeria Police Force across all tertiary institutions in the thirty-six states including the Federal Capital Territory Abuja.

The primary objectives of this forum would be to enhance communication and understanding between student leaders and the police force, leading to improved security measures on and around campuses.

“By establishing a platform for dialogue, we aim to address any concerns, foster mutual trust, and jointly develop strategies to ensure the safety of students and the host community at large.”

Senator Uthman expressed the belief that the establishment of the forum will contribute significantly to reducing the burden on the police force in their duties, saying that the initiative would give room for active participation in promoting a secure environment through community policing, collaboration and awareness.

He added, “This initiative would undoubtedly strengthen the relationship between the Nigeria Police Force and Nigerian Students community, fostering a safer and more secure environment for all.”
