Author John Green’s books resonate deeply with young readers, tackling pressing generational issues such as mental wellness, young love, and the thrill of adventure. It’s this unique blend of relatable themes that has captivated his audience.

One of his best-selling novels Turtles All The Way Down makes its film adaptation over years of development from director Hannah Marks with the adapted screenplay by executive producers Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker.

The film stars Isabela Merced (Transformers: The Last Knight, Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as the adventurous Aza Holmes, who battles her own inner demons. The rest of the cast includes Cree (Mr. Iglesias, Game Shakers), Felix Mallard (Neighbours, Locke & Key), Maliq Johnson (The Many Saints of Newark, The Equalizer), Poorna Jagannathan (The Night Of, Never Have I Ever), Judy Reyes (Scrubs, Devious Maids), and J. Smith-Cameron (Margaret, Succession).

Turtles All the Way Down tackles anxiety through its 17-year-old protagonist, Aza Holmes. It’s not easy being Aza, but she’s trying….trying to be a good daughter, a good friend, and a good student, all while navigating an endless barrage of invasive, obsessive thoughts that she cannot control. When she reconnects with Davis, her childhood crush, Aza is confronted with fundamental questions about her potential love, happiness, friendship, and hope.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta talked with director Hannah Marks and author John Green about the book-to-film adaptation, the trust in development and production, mental wellness, and Applebee’s.

Hannah Marks is best known for playing Amanda Brotzman on the television series Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. She first appeared in the 2006 film Accepted as Lizzie Gains and appeared on television with Ugly Betty and Weeds. Other notable projects included The Runaways, Banana Split, and making her feature film directorial debut with After Everything in 2018.

John Green is a best-selling author, YouTuber, and podcaster. His books made their mark in the young adult fiction market, with his best-selling novel The Fault in Our Stars selling over 50 million copies worldwide and later adapted into a film. Two more best-selling novels, Let It Snow: Three Holiday Romances and Paper Towns were also adapted into films. He has one of the most subscribed YouTube channels with the Vlogbrothers that he often collaborates with his brother Hank Green. Also, he is the founder of the annual gathering of online creators with VidCon.

Turtles All The Way Down premieres on MAX on May 2.
