Trigger warning: This article contains discussion of conversion therapy and self-harm.

Hollyoaks spoilers follow for Wednesday’s (May 1) episode that is now available to view on Channel 4 streaming. The episode in question will air on E4 on Thursday May 2 at 7pm.

Carter Shepherd (David Ames) is set to finally pay for his crimes after he was apprehended by authorities courtesy of daughter Freya Calder (Ellie Henry), who reported his whereabouts.

High school headmaster Carter, as viewers know, has been manipulating and gaslighting Lucas Hay (Oscar Curtis) into thinking that being gay is wrong, practicing conversion therapy on the teen on school grounds.

The dark and twisted truth was rumbled by John Paul McQueen (James Sutton), who came to suspect that former flame Carter – who he had a secret relationship with last year – was attempting to ‘convert’ Lucas, using the Student Behavioural Unit as a guise to do so.

With his suspicions confirmed by none other than Hannah Ashworth (Emma Rigby), John Paul set off to track down Lucas who, at this stage, had vanished – with Carter intent on kidnapping him!

Ste (Kieron Richardson) was notified about his son’s ordeal, horrified to learn what Carter had been up to. In tense scenes on Wednesday, Carter was apprehended by Ste and John Paul but he swiftly evaded their grasp, making a run for it.

Up Next

Carter made his way to Pride celebrations, where he grabbed the microphone and spouted homophobic hate, claiming those in attendance needed to ‘repent’.

Kitty Draper (Iz Hesketh), however, proved herself once again to be iconic as she cut the mic and pulled apart the headmaster’s words, before encouraging acceptance and love.

Despite this, Carter persisted, much to the horror of Freya, who witnessed her dad’s outburst. Carter pleaded with her to come with him to America, organising to meet with her on the outskirts of the village later that evening.

Lucas, meanwhile, was found in the folly by Ste.

Ste had been tipped off by Dillon Ray (Nathaniel Dass), who woke after Lucas’ brutal assault on him to find his friend unconscious, wasting little time in getting him the medical attention he needed.

Lucas’ fate hangs in the balance while Dillon regained consciousness in the hospital to find ex-lover Freya by his bedside. Dillon kept shtum about Lucas being the one who attacked him and urged Freya to be wary of her manipulative dad.

John Paul, meanwhile, confronted Carter in the village and well and truly gave him a piece of his mind, telling him that he ‘disgusts’ him.

As the showdown continued, a police car pulled up, with a detective emerging to arrest Carter. Carter believed JP to have called the police but, in a shock twist, it was Freya, who broke down in tears as she urged her dad to accept responsibility for his crimes.

Is this the last we’ve seen Carter? Will justice be served? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Discussing the events of Pride, actor David Ames told Metro.co.uk: ‘Carter unravels and, as happens so often in life when people hide behind masks, the truth comes out.

‘You can’t help your nature, you can’t help who you fall in love with – no matter how many times you try and repress that. It finds a way out – it can come out in dangerous ways, in very self-harming ways so that’s kind of where Carter has headed.

‘The storyline with Lucas and Carter – Carter has made a firm decision that he doesn’t want to be the person he was becoming though his feelings for John Paul. It couldn’t happen for him because he put a stop to it.’
