Michigan State Men’s Golf Selected to Play in NCAA Regionals

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's men's golf team was selected to play in the NCAA Regionals for the seventh time in the last eight years and will play in the Chapel Hill Regional at the Finley Golf Course on the campus of the University of North Carolina.

The Spartans, seeded No. 11 in the regional, were one of 13 teams selected to play at the site and one of 81 teams in the country to reach a regional.

The Chapel Hill Regional, as well as five other regionals, is scheduled to run from Monday, May 13 through Wednesday, May 15. Three regional sites will have 13 teams and 10 individuals and three will have 14 teams and five individuals. The top five teams (30 teams total) and the low individual not on an advancing team (six individuals total) from each regional site will advance to play in the championships at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.

"We're making a habit of this over the last eight years and that is our expectation as a program," Head Coach Casey Lubahn said. "We didn't make it easy this year but I give a ton of credit to the guys on this team for the way they battled back in the spring.

"They will say it too, but we did not have a great start this year and put our backs to the wall. We turned that around and closed the spring with six top-five finishes. To hear our name called for a regional is special and it's something that we will never take for granted."

The 13 teams competing in the Chapel Hill Regional include (in order of seed): 1. North Carolina; 2. Alabama; 3. Georgia Tech; 4. East Tennessee State; 5. Northwestern; 6. Baylor; 7. VCU; 8. LMU; 9. Long Beach State; 10. Clemson; 11. Michigan State; 12. Ball State; 13. Howard.

In his 13th season at the helm of the MSU program, Lubahn has guided the Spartans to representation at each of the last eight NCAA Tournaments and won at least one tournament in 10 of his 13 complete seasons of competition. The Spartans were selected for NCAA Regionals from 2015-16 to 2018-19, James Piot reached a regional as an individual in 2021 and the team has played in the last three regionals, including last year when MSU hosted in East Lansing.

The Spartans have seven top-five team finishes this year, including six-straight during the spring season, and are ranked No. 68 in the country in the latest NCAA Rankings.

Michigan State has been led by junior Ashton McCulloch, who was named All-Big Ten Second Team on Tuesday and was selected to the All-Big Ten Championship team after tying for third place and leading the Spartans to a fourth-place finish. McCulloch, who won the Canadian Amateur last summer, leads the team with a 70.97 scoring average over 33 rounds this year. He won the Johnnie-O at Sea Island on March 12, firing a 12-under par 204 for his first collegiate win.

Senior August Meekhof, who is second on the team with a 72.47 scoring average, was selected to the All-Big Ten Championship team after tying for sixth last week at the league championship. Graduate Drew Hackett is third on the team with a 72.87 scoring average and senior Brad Smithson is fourth with a 73.06 average.
