Canelo Alvarez has a renewed but limited relationship with Premier Boxing Champions and will make the most of the partnership when he faces Jaime Munguia on May 4. The fight for Canelo’s status as undisputed super middleweight champion airs on DAZN and Amazon

The initial partnership with PBC was lucrative for Canelo, as he signed a deal worth $100 million. Canelo fought Jermell Charlo in September, beating him in a one-sided affair. Other fights potentially on the table for Canelo included Jermell’s brother Jermall and David Benavidez, the interim WBC super middleweight champion. However, the relationship started to strain, and Canelo ended his deal with PBC.

Ultimately, Canelo worked out a one-fight deal with PBC to fight Munguia, a Golden Boy talent. He has been open regarding not fighting other Mexican competitors, as seen when fans craved an obvious Benavidez fight. However, the 33-year-old is OK facing the 27-year-old Munguia,

“Yes, I’ve said I don’t want to fight Mexican fighters,” Canelo said via The Associated Press. “But someone respectful like Munguia, someone who has earned this fight, it’s something that I’m glad we were able to make happen... This is a great source of pride for me because it’s Mexico all over. I’m proud of Munguia to come all the way he has.”

Munguia is a former super welterweight champion. Moving to middleweight and then super middleweight, Munguia only fought once in 2023, beating Sergiy Derevyanchenko in June. It was a big step up in competition, followed by a statement-making TKO win against John Ryder in January. Now, he faces a pound-for-pound great in Canelo.
