Tigers claim four medals on opening day of SWAC championships

BATON ROUGE, La. | Jackson State won four medals, including a pair of gold medals, on the opening day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday.

Kymoi Noray grabbed gold in the women's javelin with a throw of 47.00 meters (154-02), finishing 6.07 meters ahead of second-place Uzuri Graves of Southern. The mark set a new personal best for NOray and set the SWAC mark she set last year at 46.00 meters.

Mylani Galbreath claimed gold in the women's long jump competition with a final distance of 6.09 meters (19-11.75), recording the distance on her second jump of the competition and finished 0.13 meters better than second-place Shatara Johnson of Grambling State.

On the men's side, Victor Kibet and Andrew Kiplagat each reached the medal stand in the 10,000 meters with Kibet finishing second and Kiplagat third. Kibet crossed the line second in a time of 33:17.58 and Kiplagat third at 13:20.12, both finishing behind Jose Gonzalez of Texas Southern (32:36.22).

Noray also scored points for Jackson State in the women's hammer throw with a fifth-place finish at 48.79 meters (160-01) and was joined by Alexis Morris finished seventh at 47.75 meters (156-08). On the men's side, the Tigers got points from three different student-athletes in the long jump including a fourth-place finish by Ledamian Rowell at 7.34 meters (24-01.00). He was joined in the top eight by Javon Gray with a fifth-place jump of 7.28 meters (23-10.75) and Tevin Thompson in seventh at 7.16 meters (23-06.00).

Tayari Sherwood also scored points for the Tigers in the men's javelin with a distance of 46.15 meters (151-05) finishing seventh overall.

In qualifying action on Thursday, Jiya Clayton and Callie Calicut each qualified through the preliminary round of the 400-meter hurdles finishing fourth and fifth respectively based on time. Clayton finished with the fourth-fastest time at 1:01.03, while Calicut recorded the fifth-fastest time at 1:01.24. On the men's side, Ivan Donaldson Jr. qualified in the 400-meter hurdles with the fourth-fastest time at 52.71 seconds.
