Tottenham to sell big name and will sign a replacement this summer – expert

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou wants to sign a new full-back in the summer transfer window.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Tottenham, Leeds and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson claimed that the North London club have concerns in that area, particularly at left-back.

Current first-choice Destiny Udogie is out until pre-season, having undergone surgery to his left quadriceps after a training injury.

Robinson added that Spurs manager Postecoglou will also be keen to add another centre-back to his squad for next season.

Tottenham summer transfer priority revealed

The North London club are currently fighting for a European place, with Spurs sitting fifth in the Premier League table.

They will finish their campaign with meetings against Liverpool, Burnley, Man City and Sheffield United, with Postecoglou then set to turn his focus to transfers.

“He’ll look to strengthen in the full-back areas,” he told the Inside Track podcast. “With Udogie out, I was concerned against Arsenal with Ben Davies playing that inverted full-back role against Bukayo Saka.

“Everyone saw the way Saka played in the first half, and he scored due to the susceptibility of Spurs down that side.

“But centre-back is definitely an area they need to look at too. Because with Romero, his injury record isn’t great, but also is suspension record isn’t great. In saying that, I’m doing him an injustice because he’s only got seven yellow cards this season.

“But with his suspensions and injuries, and Van de Ven’s hamstring… we know what an athlete he is and how quick he is, but twice already this season his hamstring has gone. It’s very unlikely that he is going to go through a whole season without it going.

“Romero and Micky van de Ven are first-choice… we haven’t seen much of Radu Dragusin, who was brought in in January. He can play there. But if you lose Van de Ven and Romero at the same time, you’re in trouble, as we’ve seen this season.

“We’ve seen Davies play there, Emerson Royal play there. We saw them play against Man City with four full-backs across the back four. So centre-back is an area that he is going to have to strengthen.”

Tottenham

“He’s let Eric Dier go out on loan to Bayern Munich, which has worked very well for him. That will more than likely turn into a permanent deal, so he won’t be coming back into the side.
