COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The fourth-seeded and No. 17-ranked University of Michigan men's lacrosse team captured its second straight Big Ten Tournament title and an automatic berth into the 2024 NCAA Tournament with a 16-4 win over No. 9 Penn State on Saturday (May 4) in the Big Ten Tournament championship game at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium.

Junior Ryan Cohen broke the U-M single-game record for assists in a game with seven, also setting a Big Ten Tournament record in the process. Senior faceoff man Justin Wietfeldt went 19-of-24 at the dot, with 14 ground balls, and became the second player in U-M history to reach 300 ground ball pickups in a career. Justin Tiernan led all scorers with five goals, converting on half of his 10 shot attempts. Michael Boehm got the Wolverines off to a fast start with four points (two goals, two assists) all within the first six minutes of action.

Boehm earned the honor of the tournament's most outstanding player for the second straight season as Michigan improves to 6-2 all-time in the Big Ten Tournament and in the month of May.

In a contest delayed at the start by a 52-minute weather delay, Michigan (10-6) started the game off scorching hot, as Wietfeldt won the opening faceoff and fed Boehm, who finished in close at 14:54. The six-second score was the fastest marker in both Big Ten Tournament and U-M history.

Graduate student Tiernan (12:30), senior Isaac Aronson (10:12) and Boehm (9:15) gave the Wolverines a 4-0 lead to start the contest, with Boehm compiling two goals and two assists in the opening six minutes of play. Following a PSU marker, senior Justin Brown made it 5-1 at 2:28, a lead that the Wolverines held going into the second stanza.

Graduate-student long pole Cathal Roberts opened the Wolverine scoring in the second quarter, converting on a feed from Cohen at 14:11 as U-M's lead swelled to 6-3. Penn St. answered with two straight to cut it to 6-3 before Aronson converted an extra-man chance to end the PSU spurt and give U-M a 7-3 lead at 8:58.

Markers from junior Aidan Mulholland (7:21) and Tiernan (1:51) closed the half as the Wolverines led 9-3 at the intermission.

The Maize and Blue started the third on a 5-0 run, keyed by a pair from Tiernan and tallies from graduate student Christian Ronda, junior John Morgan and Mulholland's second as the Wolverines led 14-3  with 5:12 to play in the third. Tiernan's fifth at 1:35 of the stanza gave him his fifth of the day as Michigan led 15-3 with 15 minutes to play.

Brown found paydirt for the second time courtesy of Cohen's record-setting seventh assist of the evening to extend the lead to 13, 16-3. The Nittany Lions snapped their goalless drought after more than 35 minutes at 5:47, scoring to make the tally 16-4. Michigan's defense dug in for the contest's final minutes to capture its second consecutive Big Ten Tournament crown.

Wietfeldt finished 19-of-24 at the faceoff dot with 14 ground balls, while sophomore goalie Hunter Taylor marked 12 saves against only four goals allowed. Sophomore close defender Mason Whitney had three caused turnovers.

Boehm was named the tournaments most outstanding player for the second-straight season, while Cohen, Taylor, Wietfeldt, and Jack Whitney also earned spots on the squad.

U-M awaits its NCAA Tournament assignment on Sunday (May 5) at 9:30 p.m. when the NCAA Tournament field is announced on ESPNU.
