ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan softball team put two runners in scoring position in the seventh inning, but its rally fell just short in a 2-1 loss against Ohio State on Sunday afternoon (May 5) in front ot 2,206 fans at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field at Carol Hutchins Stadium.

Michigan struggled at the plate, posting just two hits, no walks and a hit-by-pitch in the game, but earned two of them in the seventh. Senior first baseman Keke Tholl was hit by the first pitch of the inning, sophomore pinch runner Madi Ramey took her place at first, before freshman outfielder Jenissa Conway roped a one-out double over the Buckeye left fielder's head and to the wall.

U-M appeared to load the bases in the next at-bat but was called out at first on review, and a strikeout ended the threat with the tying run just 60 feet away.

The Buckeyes scored their runs on solo home runs in the second and fourth innings -- both with two outs and both from OSU outfielder Kirsten Eppele. The home runs were the blemishes on an otherwise solid performance from junior right-handed pitcher Lauren Derkowski (18-9), who allowed just five total hits and three walks while fanning four Ohio State batters.

Junior outfielder Ellie Sieler cut the deficit with a solo home run of her own in the bottom of the fourth, driving the first pitch of the inning deep to right-center field for her sixth long ball of the season. Michigan also reached on OSU errors in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames but could not advance the runner into scoring position in each instance.

It was the Wolverines' second Big Ten Conference series loss this season.

Michigan (38-16, 18-4 Big Ten) will be the No. 2 seed for the Big Ten Tournament this week at Pearl Field in Iowa City, Iowa. The Wolverines will receive a first-round bye and will open play against the winner of Penn State and Maryland in the quarterfinals at 4:30 p.m. CT on Thursday (May 9).
