British actor Bernard Hill has tragically passed away at the age of 79. He was well-known for his role in the iconic Hollywood trilogy, The Lord of the Rings.

His agent, Lou Coulson, confirmed his death in the early hours of Sunday to British media outlets.

Hill’s portrayal of Captain Edward Smith in the Oscar-winning epic romance Titanic captivated audiences worldwide.

He acted Theoden, King of Rohan, in two of the three Lord of the Rings films, which earned him widespread recognition and acclaim.

However, Hill’s contributions to the entertainment industry extended beyond these blockbuster hits.

He began his career with notable roles in television, including his performance in the BBC’s 1982 acclaimed drama Boys from the Blackstuff. This film garnered numerous awards and is still regarded as one of the finest examples of its genre from that era.

Despite his illustrious film career, Hill remained committed to television. He was set to make a return in season two of the contemporary BBC drama, The Responder, alongside Martin Freeman.

The series will begin airing in the UK later on Sunday.

Hill is the only actor to have appeared in more than one of the three films awarded 11 Oscars. He is also one of the actors to have starred in more than one film grossing more than $1 billion USD.

Others include Orlando Bloom, also in The Return of the King, and Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean.
