U-M to Host In-State Foe CMU, Game Moved to Wednesday

SCHEDULE NOTE: The U-M/CMU game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, May 7, but was moved to Wednesday, May 8, due to the potential of inclement weather. Game time remains at 4 p.m.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team (25-23) will host Central Michigan in its penultimate midweek game on Wednesday (May 8). The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m., and the game will stream live on B1G+.

Notes

• U-M has won five of its last seven games but lost its first conference series of the year to Michigan State. On Friday (May 3), U-M lost a pitchers' duel, 3-2, in extra innings before losing an offensive battle on Saturday (May 4), 12-8. The Wolverines bounced back with a 10-8 win in 12 innings on Sunday to avoid the sweep. Jonathan Kim, Mitch Voit and Mack Timbrook all homered in the game with Cole Caruso having the RBI single to put U-M ahead in the 12th.

• The Wolverines lead the nation in double plays (53) and double plays per game (1.10). U-M kept the lead after turning three over the weekend at least one in 11 of its last 12 games. Both Kyle Dernedde and Timbrook led the team with 37 on the season. This year's team has passed 16 of the past 24 year's totals including the past 12. At the current pace, U-M is set to have 61 through the regular season, which would rank fourth since 2000.    

• In his fifth year, Jacob Denner has 22 appearances with 66 innings pitched and 52 strikeouts. He has moved up the career leaderboards in three categories. He is now alone in third place with 88 career appearances after two over the weekend to break a tie with John Arvai. In innings pitched, Denner passed four players over the weekend with nine innings across two games and now sits in sixth place all-time at 267.1 innings. Denner also tied Tommy Henry in sixth all-time with 251 career strikeouts. He is five away from tying Brett Adcock and entering the top five. 

• After missing 24 games due to injury, Kim returned to action in the Long Beach State series as a defensive substitution. and reached on a bunt single in his first at-bat back as a pinch hitter. He started in the Kent State midweek game before starting all three games in centerfield against MSU. Over the weekend, Kim reached in all three games, tallying six hits, three runs and two RBIs. He also had two home runs over the weekend and is hitting .313 with five homers on the season.

Stephen Hrustich had a strong weekend at the plate with six hits including two home runs and four RBIs. On the season, he is hitting .300 and has set a new season career high with 12 home runs. He leads the team in walks and on-base percentage with 43 walks and a .455 on-base percentage. He is second in the conference and 26th nationally in walks. Hrustich is one of only two players to appear in every game this season, joined by Dernedde.

• Timbrook had a red-hot April hitting .500 in the month. He has continued the streak into May with three extra-base hits over the past two games. Timbrook had a game-tying three-run home run in the fourth before an RBI double in the fifth for a four-RBI day. On the season, Timbrook is hitting .335 with a .426 on-base percentage with 36 runs.    

• Voit joins Kim and Hrustich with a two-homer week. His first home run of the week came in a pinch-hit appearance against Kent State which tied the game at four in the ninth inning. Voit then added a solo home run on Sunday against the Spartans in the seventh inning. He is second on the team in home runs with nine on the season and is third in average hitting .291. He also has 19 doubles on the season which ranks second in the conference and 19th nationally. 

• Central Michigan is 15-32 on the season and was swept by Akron over the weekend. CMU has a combined 3-14 record against seven common opponents with U-M having a 6-5 record against the same opponents. All-time, U-M is 49-29-1 against the Chippewas and 33-11-1 at home including a walk-off win last year.
