Wolverines-Pioneers to Face Off in NCAA Tournament First Round

5/6/2024 12:25:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan men's lacrosse team will take on No. 7-ranked and fifth-seeded Denver in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament on Saturday (May 11) at 3 p.m. MT at Peter Barton Stadium in Denver, Colo. The contest will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.

Notes

• The Wolverines (10-6) enter the NCAA Tournament fresh off a repeat of a Big Ten Tournament title, and will hit the road for a first-round matchup against the Pioneers. A member of the Big East Conference in lacrosse, Denver is 11-3 on the season with a 5-0 record in conference play.

• The Wolverines are led by their attack unit that features the trio of junior Ryan Cohen (31g, 34a), senior Michael Boehm (33g, 30a) and graduate Justin Tiernan (53g, 3a). Together, they boast 184 points to form one of the top trios in the country. Tiernan ranks second in the country in goals/game with 3.31, while Cohen is No. 23 in the country in assists, and has at least one point in 46 consecutive games. Boehm is No. 37 in the land in points per game (3.94).

• Against Penn State in the Big Ten Championship, Cohen broke the Big Ten Tournament and Michigan program record for assists in a contest with seven, five of which came in the second half on goals from seven different players.

• Since the 14:19 mark in the second quarter against Johns Hopkins in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals, Michigan has outscored opponents, 25-5, and held both JHU (fourth quarter) and Penn State (third quarter scoreless in a quarter.

• Senior faceoff man Justin Wietfeldt ranks fourth nationally in faceoff win percentage (62 percent) and second in the country in ground balls per game (9.06). With 145 ground balls on the season, he recently became the second Wolverine to eclipse 300 pickups in a career with 310, and is two ground balls from breaking former teammate Nick Rowlett's program record of 311.

• U-M is No. 22 in the country and second in the Big Ten in scoring offense (13.00 goals/game), No. 15 in assists per game (7.69) and No. 13 in extra-man offense (45 percent) as well as No. 18 in points per game (20.69).

• Thus far, this season's late-season run has nearly mirrored last season. In both years, U-M defeated Ohio State in its final regular season game to lock in the No. 4 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and beat the Buckeyes again in the first round. U-M has then gone on to defeat the top seed in the Big Ten Tournament in the semifinal round and defeat the No. 3 seed in the Big Ten Tournament Championship game.

• The Wolverines are 6-2 all-time in the month of May under head coach Kevin Conry with a 2-0 record this season -- 3-1 record in 2023 and 1-1 mark in 2021. The NCAA berth is U-M's second in program history after making it to the dance for the first time last year and went 1-1 in the tournament with a first- round win over Cornell before falling to Duke in the quarterfinals.

• Boehm is the first player in Big Ten Tournament history to earn Most Outstanding Player in back-to-back seasons. In the three contests in the tourney, he totaled nine goals and 14 points in three games. In addition to Boehm, Cohen, Wietfeldt, senior close defender Jack Whitney and sophomore goalie Hunter Taylor also earned spots on the all-tournament team.

• The trek to Colorado will mark the third time in program history the Wolverines have faced off against the Pioneers -- as U-M played contests at Peter Barton Stadium in both 2012 and 2013, suffering setbacks in both contests. Overall, it will be the fourth contest in the state of Colorado all-time. The Wolverines also have played at Air Force on two occasions.

• The Pioneers earned an at-large bid to the tournament after falling to Villanova in the opening round of the Big East Tournament. In terms of common opponents, Denver defeated Johns Hopkins in its season opener on Feb. 3 by a 13-12 score at Homewood Field, knocked off Ohio State on March 17 in Columbus (9-6) and also defeated Marquette, 15-9, on April 26 at home.
