Finally we have a release window as Star Wars: Skeleton Crew premiere’s this Christmas and also features both matte paintings and stop-motion. As per Collider, a release window of Christmas this year has been announced for Skeleton Crew. We also have a new synopsis for the show, from creator Jon Watts himself, check it out.
“It’s about a group of kids that find a mysterious secret on their planet and accidentally get lost out in the galaxy, and it’s the story abut them trying to find their way back home.”
Watts spoke with Collider’s Steve Weintraub at this years CCXP this past weekend.
That matches with the very little details we knew already. Actually, we know next to nothing else about this one and the Barside Buzz has been suspiciously quiet for this one.
I remains to be seen how interested in this one starring kids I will be. It depends whether this skews more Stranger Things or Ewoks: Caravan of Courage.
Additionally Watts revealed that Skeleton Crew features two VFX techniques that were used in the OT. Matte paintings for backgrounds and stop-motion for presumably models of spaceships or other vehicles.

“I got to use all the cool stuff on my most recent Star Wars show. We had pre-viz, MOCAP, we shot on the volume, we did everything. But the most fun part was we also used all the old school techniques as well,” he said. “We got Phil Tippett to do stop-motion. Also we did matte paintings, like real old-fashioned matte paintings. We got an ILM painter out of retirement to come out and do that. So to me, all that stuff is fun, but it’s just another tool, and it depends on how you use it.”
If you don’t know Tippet did stop motion for the OT and was responsible for the Hoth AT-AT attack scene. That’s kinda cool and at least we know the show won’t be all shot on the Volume and feel like it’s set in the smallest Galaxy ever.
