Players are currently having a tough time logging into Final Fantasy XIV after the MMORPG was hit with DDoS attacks on May 6. Square Enix has acknowledged the issue but hasn’t yet updated fans on when the outages will be fixed.
“We are currently experiencing technical difficulties due to a DDoS attack.
Players may experience the following issues as a result,” the publisher wrote in an update on FFXIV’s website. “We are investigating the attack and taking countermeasures. Additional information will be provided as the situation develops.”
Square Enix confirmed the issues began around 9:00 a.m. ET on Monday and have been causing players to get disconnected from game servers across North America, Europe, and elsewhere, as well as problems logging back into the game and accessing data. One player jokingly blamed the DDoS attack for possibly the strongest Cosmo Arrow ever witnessed in an Omega Protocol raid.
The FFXIV service outage comes as Square Enix prepares to release its next expansion, Dawntrail, on July 2, with early access beginning on June 28. The next chapter in the ongoing saga takes players to the new tropical social hub of Tuliyollal, adds two more job classes, and raises the level cap to 100. Players also hope the update will bring some major changes to healers.
The company is previewing more changes coming to the game, which include graphical updates, in a live letter hosted by the developers on May 16. In the meantime, some players are racing to catch up on the existing expansions which can take anywhere from 50 hours to 300 for those who have never played FFXIV before. The game also recently came to Xbox Series X/S for the first time ever, where players can try the base game and first two expansions for free.
Update 5/7/2024 3:06 p.m. ET: Connection issues appear to be getting better for some players, especially in North America. However, Square Enix hasn’t officially updated fans on the status of the DDoS attacks yet.
