Ian Gelder, the actor known for playing Game of Thrones‘ Kevan Lannister, died this week. He was 74.

According to BBC News, Gelder’s husband, Ben Daniels, confirmed the news of his passing in an Instagram post on Tuesday (May 7).

“It is with huge huge sadness and a heavy heart broken into a million pieces that I’m leaving this post to announce the passing of my darling husband and life partner Ian Gelder,” he wrote. “Ian was diagnosed with bile duct cancer in December and yesterday he passed at 13.07.”

Daniels explained that he had “stopped all work to be his carer but neither of [them] had any idea that it would all be so fast.

“He was my absolute rock and we’d been partners for more than 30 years,” he shared, ultimately praising his late husband as “the kindest, most generous spirited and loving human being.”

Gelder was born on June 3, 1949, per The Hollywood Reporter. According to the outlet, his first TV appearance was on the British police drama New Scotland Yard in 1972.

Gelder prominently portrayed Kevan Lannister, Lord Tywin Lannister’s (Charles Dance) younger brother, in 12 episodes across four seasons of Game of Thrones. His other notable on-screen credits include Torchwood, EastEnders, His Dark Materials, and Doctor Who.

His most recent TV appearance was in an episode of the British crime drama Father Brown, per The Guardian.

The late actor also excelled on stage. The Royal Shakespeare Company, who referred to him as “a regular on the RSC stage from the 70s onwards,” also honored Gelder online, describing him as “one of the most kind and gentle people in the business.”

South West London’s Orange Tree Theatre, where Gelder performed in a production of The March on Russia in 2017, remembered him on X, noting, “it was a true honour to have him be part of the OT’s history.”
