Girl, Interrupted? More like set, divided. Elisabeth Moss recently dished on the “incredible experience” starring in James Mangold‘s drama based on the memoir of the same title by Susanna Kaysen, but also revealed some interesting on-set dynamics.

On last Wednesday’s (May 1) episode of Kelly Ripa‘s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, Moss reflected on working alongside so many “movie stars” at only 15 or 16 years old, per Variety. After praising the “amazing cast of women” including Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie, Cleo DuVall, Brittany Murphy, and Whoopi Goldberg, she likened the experience of filming Girl, Interrupted to “being dropped into the Wizard of Oz.”

“I was so just sort of awe-struck by my surroundings and working with Winona and Angelina, and they were so different and they were both really interesting,” she continued.

Moss recalled that “there were two kinds of camps” on set: “There was the Winona Ryder camp and the Angelina Jolie camp,” she explained, clarifying that the division was “off camera, but based on what was on camera, like based on the script.”

While Moss said that she “was in the Winona Ryder camp,” she conceded that “the Angelina Jolie camp was really cool.”

“I was so intimidated by the Angelina Jolie camp,” she added. “I had no thoughts of ever being able to be in that camp. It was so cool. It was all the cool girls.”

Moss, now 41, noted that she’s “spoken to Angelina since then and she’s lovely, but at the time it was just incredibly intimidating.” She also highlighted that she’s “never brought it up” to her.

“I’m sure she would have no idea what I was talking about anyway. I was just definitely not cool enough to be in her camp,” she said.

According to Variety, Ryder previously teased this divide between herself and Jolie in 2010, per the Sydney Morning Herald.

“I remember thinking, ‘Oh we’re going to turn out to be great friends.’ But I think she needed to be able to look at me just as the character Susanna, not as Winona, so in a very respectful way she just kind of kept her distance,” she explained at the time.

Later on in last week’s podcast, Moss noted that if she could give her younger self advice, she “would encourage [her]self to enjoy the experiences” she was having.

“Even when we’re talking about Girl, Interrupted and, you know, I had a great time, but I was nervous and I was intimidated by these movie stars and all of that,” she shared. “So I would encourage myself to enjoy the moment.”
