Sophomore finishes with three-day total of 1-under 215 at NCAA Auburn Regional; Cougars tied for fifth as team

AUBURN, Ala. – University of Houston sophomore Moa Svedenskiold tied for fifth at the NCAA Auburn Regional with a three-day total of 1-under 215 to lead the Cougars on Wednesday afternoon.

Competing on the 6,522-yard, par-72 course at Auburn University Club, Svedenskiold posted a total of 74 in the Final Round, her first 18-hole total over par at the Regional.

Starting off No. 1, the Halmstad, Sweden, native ran into trouble with three bogeys on the final four holes of her front nine but sank eight pars with a birdie on the par-5 16th hole to finish with a 74 and tie with North Carolina's Kayla Smith.

As a team, Houston used a valiant effort at the end but fell just short of qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Sophomore Alexa Saldana and junior Hyeonji Kang each drained birdies on their final holes of the tournament to pull the team to within a stroke of fifth place.

The seventh-seeded Cougars posted a score of 301 in the Final Round and tied for sixth with Georgia with a three-day, 54-hole total of 892 on the 6,522-yard, par-72 course.

Host Auburn won the team championship with a score of 874 while Oregon finished second at 878. North Carolina (885), South Carolina (891) and Tulsa (891) completed the Top Five and advanced to the NCAA Championships at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif., on May 17-22.

Auburn's Anna Davis won the individual title with a score of 5-under 211 to finish three shots ahead of teammate Megan Schofill and Louise Rydqvist of South Carolina. Minnesota's Isabella McCauley birdied her last hole to tie for second at 214 and earned the individual invitation to the NCAA Championships.

Saldana tied for 18th at 223 while senior Nicole Abelar tied for 30th at 229. Kang tied for 36th at 230, and sophomore Natalie Saint Germain – making her debut at the NCAA Auburn Regional after a lineup change – finished 61st with a 78.

NCAA REGIONAL HISTORY
This was the eighth NCAA Regional appearance in the young history of Houston Women's Golf. It also marked the ninth straight season Houston will be represented in the NCAA postseason after Annie Kim competed as an individual at the 2022 NCAA Franklin Regional.

This marked the second straight year Houston has competed as a No. 7 seed at an NCAA Regional, tying with the 2017-18 team for the highest seeding in school history.

Abelar competed in the third NCAA Regional of her career with the last two coming with the Cougars. Saldana and Svedenskiold teed off in their second NCAA Regionals while Kang and Kim made their NCAA debuts.
