I love my iPad mini. It’s the best iPad I’ve ever owned — even after owning an iPad Air and iPad Pro in the past. However, there’s one feature of the new iPad Pro that has me wondering if it might make sense to give the Pro another go.

On Tuesday, Apple hosted its “Let Loose” event and announced a new iPad Pro and iPad Air as well as its new Apple Pencil Pro and next-generation Magic Keyboard. In addition, the company announced new versions of Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro.

The new iPad Pro has a lot of new features

There’s a lot going on with the new iPad Pro. The latest generation has received a new, thinner body that has actually now made it the thinnest product Apple has ever made. It comes packed with the new M4 chip, which uses second-generation 3-nanometer technology to offer a CPU with four performance cores and six efficiency cores, a 10-core GPU, and a new Neural Engine that can process 38 trillion operations per second.

It also comes with an improved 12MP back camera, a new adaptive True Tone flash, and the TrueDepth camera system on the front finally moves to the landscape location. The USB-C Connector supports Thunderbolt 3 and USB 4 (up to 40Gb/s) and the new iPad Pro features Wi-Fi 6E and support for eSIM over traditional physical SIM cards.

It’s also compatible with the new Apple Pencil Pro and updated Magic Keyboard accessories, both of which elevate the capabilities to turn the iPad Pro into a creativity or productivity machine.

It’s really the display, though

While all of those are great updates, the biggest thing for me was the upgrade to the display. Apple has finally brought an OLED display to an iPad.

I am a huge fan of OLED. After the iPhone switched to OLED and I saw the difference in picture quality compared to LED, I opted for OLED at every opportunity. Buying a new television? OLED. Buying a Nintendo Switch? OLED.

So, while I love my iPad mini, I’ve always wished it had an OLED display. You just can’t beat the color and contrast performance of OLED, and I can’t help but immediately notice the difference now. Now that OLED has come to the iPad lineup, I can’t help but wonder if I might make the switch to the iPad Pro and enjoy those inky blacks and fantastic colors and contrast.

Time will tell, and I’ll have to actually see what it looks like in my local Apple Store. Now, what we REALLY need is an iPad mini with an OLED display. That’s the ultimate iPad.
