Cyriel Dessers could destroy Celtic player in Rangers showdown – McAvennie

Cyriel Dessers could cause trouble for Liam Scales when Rangers face Celtic in the Old Firm derby as the defender has been warned to “be careful”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Frank McAvennie insisted that Dessers has got to be given respect after scoring 20 goals this season, with his movement likely to worry Scales.

The former Celtic striker also explained that his link-up play with Abdallah Sima could be one to watch if the winger returns from injury.

Philippe Clement, meanwhile, had urged the striker to be more ruthless in front of goal, and with 20 goals, his words are clearly having an effect.

Despite a slow start to his career at Ibrox, the Nigerian has been tipped to be a “huge” member of Clement’s squad in the hunt for further silverware.

Celtic warned about Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers in Old Firm

Given Celtic’s recent record in Old Firm derbies, particularly at Parkhead, Rangers will be relying on the likes of Dessers and Sima to step up.

However, McAvennie’s comment that Greg Taylor and Scales could be overwhelmed by the combination may provide some reassurance.

Dessers is just a big lump, but he’s scored 20 goals so you’ve got to give him respect,” he told Football Insider.

If he starts running at Scales… Scales has got to watch him because he makes some good runs. He does make some good runs.

Scales has got to watch that. I think Sima will be back and he’ll put him out against Greg Taylor.

They need to be careful of that because Scales will go over to cover him and then…

I don’t think Celtic are going to worry. The more we put them under pressure, the more disheartened they’re going to get up front.

Hopefully it’s going to be a good day for all apart from one side of Glasgow.”
