Nottingham Forest well placed to condemn rivals to £60m blow – Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Nottingham Forest can condemn Luton and Burnley to a £60million loss if they survive relegation.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – admitted Luton have taken advantage of their time in the Premier League and will be “in a very good position” even if they go down.

Nottingham Forest’s appeal against their four-point deduction for a breach of Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) was rejected earlier this week (7 May).

Nevertheless, the latest twist in the fight against relegation keeps the Midlands club three points above the drop zone with two games left to play this term.

Burnley will be relegated on Saturday (11 May) if they fail to beat Tottenham, while Luton are likely to need a big goal difference swing to overhaul Forest in their final two games.

Sheffield United’s relegation has already been confirmed, meaning all three promoted sides could go down for the first time since the 1997-98 season.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “You’re looking at losing £50-60million if you end up going down.

“I remember with Burnley’s last relegation, there was a lot of concern about the debt levels at the club – but they managed to come straight back up.

“Luton, it does appear, have cut their cloth very well to handle the shock of being relegated.

“They refurbished their stadium, and the whole club is in better shape.

“It doesn’t look like they’ve overspent on players, so they may come out in a very good position next season – even if they go down.”
