ISU and OSU Take the Lead at 2024 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championship

After a lengthy day, the 2024 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championship opener concluded with the Oklahoma State Cowgirls and the Iowa State men in the lead. A three-and-a-half-hour weather delay in Waco, Texas pushed Thursday evening’s schedule into early Friday morning.

Only the women’s hammer throw and the 10,000 meters were scored while the men’s hammer throw, javelin and 10,000 meters were recorded. After two events, the Cowgirls earned 18 points followed by No. 2 Oklahoma and No. 3 K-State with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Cyclone men tallied 25 points, garnering a three-point lead over second-place BYU (22 points) and scoring nine more than K-State’s 16 points.
K-State claimed both the men’s and women’s hammer throw. Kade McCall opened the day winning the program’s first men’s hammer throw title after recording a mark of 69.83 meters in his last attempt. On the women’s side, Monique Hardy earned the gold medal during her first attempt with a launch of 64.24 meters.

Baylor’s Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi captured his third consecutive men’s javelin title with a Championship record throw of 80.02 meters. His launch on Friday was his best of the season and ranks second in the nation.

Iowa State’s Sanele Masondo set a facility record in the men’s 10,000 meters (29:14.53), earning the junior a Big 12 title in his first season with the Cyclones. His teammate Said Mechaal finished closely behind him as ISU claimed the top two finishes in the event.

Marking the end of the first day at 12:40 a.m. CT was Oklahoma State’s Gabby Hentemann winning her second Big 12 women’s 10,000 meters in three seasons after crossing the finish line in 34:31.91.

The women’s javelin, which was rescheduled, will resume Championship action Friday at 9:15 a.m. CT.
