Update: The woman’s body was found in the river on Saturday, May 11, the sheriff’s office said. She was identified as Brenda Duran, 30. The report also corrected her son’s age; he is 14.

Original report:

A mother is missing after jumping into the San Joaquin River near Newman to help her struggling child, the Stanislaus County sheriff’s office said.

Deputies were called to the Hills Ferry area around 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9, by a report of a drowning.

The woman and her 1314-year-old son had gone into the river to rescue her 11-year-old daughter, the sheriff’s report said. Both siblings made it out of the river, but their mother disappeared.

The search continued until nightfall and was to resume Friday morning.

On Tuesday, two siblings — ages 2 and 4 — died after being swept away in Mill Creek, in the San Bernardino Mountains.

Last month, a 19-year-old man went missing in the Trinity River near Hoopa after he and another person attempted to rescue a girl who was swept up in the current. The girl and the other rescuer were pulled from the river, but Joseph Dawson Viveiros Jr. has not been found.
