Man City to open talks over Rodri deal – sources

Manchester City are likely to open talks with Rodri over a new contract this summer after further Barcelona links, sources have told Football Insider

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed the Spanish giants are unlikely to have the funds available to sign Rodri this summer.

The La Liga club are reportedly in £1billion worth of debt, forcing them to operate under a reduced transfer budget in recent years.

O’Rourke revealed Man City will be keen to reward the Spain international with a new contract this summer despite his current deal running until 2027.

Etihad chiefs are unlikely to entertain offers for the 27-year-old after he’s once again showed this season why he’s regarded as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

Rodri could sign new Man City contract to end exit speculation

Rodri has played a key role in Pep Guardiola’s system since joining the club from Atletico Madrid in 2019.

While a number of first-team players have been allowed to move on during that time, the Spaniard has remained a constant in the Citizens midfield.

Rodri has now gone 47 league games without tasting defeat – the fourth-longest run without picking up a loss in Premier League history.

Man City

O’Rourke revealed Man City will do “everything they can” to ensure he signs a new contract to put any speculation around his future to bed.

The midfielder is currently well-placed to add to the growing list of titles he’s won during his time at the Etihad, with the Citizens currently second in the Premier League and set to face Manchester United in the FA Cup final.
