Leicester City have big transfer advantage over rivals – Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has warned Leicester City “will struggle” in the Premier League despite their dominance in the Championship.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed manager Enzo Maresca is an unknown quantity as a top-flight manager and “will find it a lot harder”.

Leicester secured promotion as Championship winners, winning 31 of their 46 games and amassing 97 points.

The Foxes will be joined by Ipswich and one of Leeds, Southampton, West Brom and Norwich in the Premier League next season.

Maresca joined the club last summer (2023) but Football Insider revealed last week (30 April) that Leicester are confident of fending off interest and tying him down to a new deal – with talks set to open in the coming days.

Wyness suggested the extra few weeks to start transfer preparations could be vital for the Midlands club.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think Leicester will struggle.

“I have full admiration for anyone who can get a club out of the Championship. It’s a very tough league.

“But as we’ve seen this season, the three coming up have struggled because it’s a completely different level.

“I believe Enzo Maresca will find it a lot harder. I don’t know how he’s going to adapt.

“They will have an extra few weeks compared to the rest of the clubs to prepare, which means a lot in the transfer window preparations.

“They are a Premier League club, and they should be in the top flight.

“Maresca is yet to prove himself in the big league, so the jury’s out.”
