Chelsea chief Todd Boehly embarrassed by Amanda Staveley – Ex-PL CEO

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Chelsea chief Todd Boehly has been shown up by Newcastle United’s Amanda Staveley.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted clubs should be handled with “kid gloves” following a takeover rather than making “dramatic changes” immediately.

Chelsea will finish outside the top four in consecutive seasons after the Clearlake Capital takeover at Stamford Bridge in 2022.

The Blues have sacked two managers in that time, and speculation persists over the future of current boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Newcastle were purchased by a Saudi-backed consortium in 2021 and have enjoyed a meteoric rise since then as they vie to become an elite Premier League side.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “There’s no doubt that it has been a learning curve for Boehly and his team.

“They will point to unforeseen circumstances and injuries.

“I contrast their time with Newcastle, who have been an exemplary club.

“Amanda Staveley went in there and got a feel for the club over a year, before starting the spending.

“That is really the way for any new owner to do it.

“The temptation, of course, is to come in and make major promises, dramatic changes – and show you are the great guy and the white knight.

“The reality is that a football club is a delicate operation. You’ve got to handle it with kid gloves and understand it.

“This will be the debate internally. They’ll have learned a lot, and things are looking more stable.

“They have to stick with Pochettino, in my view, and try and get things moving and get the fanbase back on side.

“Too much change is not great. Often you just buy the same problems again.

“There can be difficult periods, but if you work together you can get it done.”
