No. 9/8 Men's Lacrosse Set to Face No. 7/6 Georgetown in NCAA Tournament First Round

Game-time is set for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 9/8 Penn State men's lacrosse team encounters on their NCAA tournament run with a first round match-up at No. 7/6 Georgetown on Sunday, May 12 at 2:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.

SERIES HISTORY

  • This is the 16th meeting between Georgetown and Penn State. 
  • The Hoyas lead the series 10-5 with the last match-up coming on May, 2 2009 where Penn State defeated the Hoyas in double overtime 12-11. 

SCOUTING GEORGETOWN

  • Georgetown enters Sunday with a 12-3 overall record and 4-1 record in Big East play. 
  • Leading the offense is Aidan Carroll who tallies 56 points off 35 goals and 21 assists.
  • In net stands Anderson Moore who tallies a save percentage of .527, GAA of 9.11 and record of 12-3.  
  • They are coming off an 11-10 overtime victory over Villanova to clinch the Big East tournament title. 

NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY

  • Penn State makes their seventh NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. 
  • The Nittany Lions have won a total of four games in the NCAA tournament and has made the final four in two seasons.
  • Their first appearance was in 2003. Last season, Penn State made it all the way to the Championship Weekend were they narrowly fell to Duke in the semifinals of the tournament by a score of 13-12 in overtime.

BROTHERLY BATTLE

  • Freshman Brendan Leary's brother Jack plays midfield for the Hoyas.
  • Jack is currently a senior with the team and has one goal and five assists this season. 
  • Brendan meanwhile has mainly played in the defensive midfield slot as he has scooped three ground balls and caused two turnovers this season. 
MALONE DRAFTED BY MARYLAND WHIPSNAKES IN 2024 PLL DRAFT
  • TJ Malone was drafted by the Maryland Whipsnakes in the third round with the 17th overall pick in the 2024 Premier Lacrosse League College Draft on Tuesday night. 
  • Malone has been one of the top scoring leaders in Penn State program history with 150 goals and 98 assists in 66 games played, He is a two-time Tewaaraton nominee, two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, USILA All-America selection, Inside Lacrosse All-American, and a two-time Big Ten honoree. Malone currently sits fourth in the nation in points per game at 5.29 while tallying 40 goals and 34 assists for 74 points which is a career-high. 
  • The West Chester, Pa. native becomes the 19th student-athlete in program history to be drafted in the PLL or Major League Lacrosse Drafts. The last Nittany Lion to get drafted in the PLL Draft was Mac O'Keefe in the 2021 draft by the Chaos.
