UT and BYU Lead Big 12 OTF Championship Heading into Final Day

WACO, Texas – After seven events were scored for both the men’s and the women’s competitions, Texas’ women and BYU’s men claimed the leads after Day Two at the 2024 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Baylor’s Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium.

Like Thursday, another lengthy weather delay on Friday plagued the event. The evening’s field events had just started when the delay was called. Action resumed almost seven hours later with an adjusted schedule.

Texas accumulated 49 points to take the lead on the women’s side with Oklahoma State and Oklahoma tied for second with 34 points. BYU sits at fourth with 32 points while K-State wraps up the top 5 with 31 points.

On the men’s side, BYU has 56 points followed by No. 2 Iowa State’s 44 and No. 3 UT’s 42 points. Two points separate No. 4 Oklahoma from No. 5 Oklahoma State with 23 and 21 points, respectively.

Due to a weather delay on Thursday, the women’s javelin was rescheduled to Friday morning. TCU’s Irene Jepkemboi kept the title with the Horned Frogs for the second straight season as her third attempt (55.67 meters) earned the freshman her first Big 12 medal.

Texas’ Kristine Blazevica registered 5,954 points during the seven events of the women’s heptathlon to win her fourth consecutive title. No other Big 12 combined events specialist has captured the women’s heptathlon more than twice.

Joining Blazevica as Big 12 title winners from UT on Friday were Marilyn Nwora (women’s shot put) and Leo Neugebauer (men’s long jump). Nwora won with her second throw that reached a distance of 17.74 meters while Neugebauer leaped 7.77 meters during his first attempt.

Kansas’ Alexander Jung boasted a career-high 7,706 points in the men’s decathlon to become the second Jayhawk to win the event’s gold medal at the Big 12 Championship. He placed within the top 3 spots in half of the 10 events.

James Corrigan collected BYU’s first Big 12 title on the men’s side as he marked a record-setting performance in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. The sophomore’s time of 8:29.24 was a personal best and outpaced the Big 12 record set in 2021 (8:31.82).

Iowa State garnered two victories on Friday. Janette Schraft earned her first Big 12 title following a sub-10 minute (9:58.75) 3,000-meter steeplechase run. During her victory, the senior set a stadium record. Cam Jones won the men’s shot put with a throw of 19.68 meters, sweeping the event during the 2024 season as he also claimed the indoor Big 12 title.

Baylor’s Alexis Brown earned the women’s long jump with a mark of 6.83 meters. The jump was her last of the night and became her career-best leap in the event.

All preliminary events scheduled for Friday will be contested as timed finals on Saturday.  The final day of competition will begin at 11:00 a.m. CT with the women’s pole vault.
