Borussia Dortmund’s tweet about Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho ahead of their Bundesliga match against Mainz epically backfired on the German club.

Jadon Sancho returned to Germany in January after Borussia Dortmund signed him on a loan deal from Manchester United.

The 24-year-old United misfit made his name at the Bundesliga outfit before Sancho completed his £73m blockbuster move to Old Trafford in 2021.

However, Sancho has underwhelmed during his time at United and was frozen out of the first-team squad in 2023 after his rift with manager Erik ten Hag.

Erik ten Hag had publicly revealed why Sancho was not part of his United matchday squad for the 3-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates last September.

Sancho hit back on social media in a bombshell statement and the former England international was subsequently excluded from the United first team.

The ex-Three Lions winger was handed a lifeline away from Old Trafford when Dortmund agreed to take him on loan until the end of the season.

What did Dortmund tweet about Sancho?

Jadon Sancho has made 19 appearances across all competitions for Borussia Dortmund in his second spell and has scored three times for the club.

The United outcast has even impressed with his performances, including his display in the first-leg semi-final win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Dortmund took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, and praised Sancho ahead of their Bundesliga outing against Mainz.

The Bundesliga’s X account posted a photo of United loanee Sancho wearing a crown made out of ‘BVB’ wording – a nickname associated with Dortmund.

“Heavy is the head with the crown, he still wears it,” Dortmund wrote as the caption.

United fans initially reacted and demanded the German club drop a hefty fee to sign Sancho, with the Bundesliga side taunting supporters with a previous tweet.

However, the tweet did not age well for Dortmund and the Bundesliga side were in for a rude awakening with their encounter against Mainz.

How did Sancho perform in Mainz vs Dortmund?

Mainz inflicted a 3-0 victory over Dortmund, who have reached the Champions League final, on Saturday at the Mewa Arena in their Bundesliga clash.

Sancho started the match on the bench and the United winger was brought on for the second half, having replaced teammate Donyell Malen at the Mewa Arena.

However, the Dortmund player failed to impress with his second-half showing against Mainz, with Sofascore awarding Sancho an overall score of 6.3.

According to Sofascore, Sancho was unsuccessful with all four of his dribbling attempts and was dribbled past once during the match.

The United loanee managed 43 touches and had 25 out of 29 accurate passes (86 per cent), while Sancho lost possession a shocking 11 times for Dortmund.
