16-year-old boy pronounced dead, several injured after shooting at Northborough house party

A 16-year-old boy from Bellingham is dead and several others are injured after a shooting at a large house party in Northborough early Sunday morning, officials said.

Around 1 a.m., guests at the 333 Howard St. party flagged down a police officer to tell them someone had brought a gun inside the home, according to a statement from District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. during a press briefing Sunday afternoon. When more police arrived, they heard multiple gunshots from inside the residence, where there were more than 200 people.

Northborough Police Chief Brian Griffin described the scene as “chaotic.”

Authorities carried the 16-year-old to an ambulance and drove him to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where he was pronounced dead.

Another 17-year-old victim was shot in his rear end and treated at Marlborough Hospital, Early said. He was later released.

Two other people were treated at Marlborough Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and were also released.

There were several others with visible injuries who were treated at the scene but declined when officers requested they be taken to the hospital.

Bellingham police and school district officials said in a statement that the victim and other party attendees were from the town, which is about a half hour’s drive from Northborough. The victim was not a student in Bellingham Public Schools, officials said. Bellingham police believe the shooting “was an isolated incident of violence and there is no threat to anyone in Bellingham or to the schools.”

Bellingham High School will have increased police presence the next few days, and guidance staff will be available to those affected by the death, officials said.

Three suspects, ranging approximately from age 19 to 27, have been arrested on gun-related charges. They are not from Northborough, and they will be arraigned in Westborough District Court on Monday.

“Our thoughts go out to the victim and the victim’s family during this senseless act of violence,” said Griffin. “It’s especially difficult being Mother’s Day.”
