Cardinals Drop Finale at No. 8 North Carolina

Louisville took a 16-7 loss on Sunday in Chapel Hill.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Louisville baseball team closed out its weekend series at No. 8 North Carolina with a 16-7 loss on Sunday.

Louisville (29-22, 13-14 ACC) has now lost four straight, matching its longest losing streak of the season.

The Cardinals failed to score after getting a runner in scoring position in each of the first two innings.

North Carolina (39-11, 20-7) took control from there, scoring eight times in the second inning and never looking back. The Tar Heels tacked on three more in the fourth and looked like they would make quick work of the Cardinals.

However, Louisville crept back into the ballgame with a six-run fifth. JT Benson crushed a leadoff home run before the next two batters singled. A North Carolina throwing error plated Louisville's second run and Isaac Humphrey dropped in a double for run number three.

Eddie King Jr. then doubled Louisville's run total with one swing. The junior snuck a three-run home run inside the left field foul pole to get the Cardinals back within five.

The Tar Heels got one of the runs back in the bottom half of the fifth, but Louisville matched it with a RBI from Alex Alicea in the sixth. However, that was all the Louisville offense would get, while UNC tacked on four more runs in the eighth for the final tally.

Benson had a three-hit day to lead the Cardinals, including his seventh home run. King had two hits with his ninth long ball of the season and Alicea went 2-for-4 and reached four times in his first game batting in the leadoff spot.

The Cardinals will now return home for the final four games of the regular season. Louisville will host Indiana on Tuesday night with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. ET at Jim Patterson Stadium.
