Obama Campaign Official Peggy Moore and Wife Killed in Calif. Car Crash

Moore and wife Hope Wood were remembered as "remarkable women who dedicated their lives to equality and justice"

Peggy Moore, a former campaign official for former President Barack Obama, and her wife were killed in a car crash in San Diego County, Calif. over the weekend.

Moore, 60, and Hope Wood, 48, were passengers in a Jeep pickup truck on their way home from a concert on Friday night, May 10, when the vehicle hit a sedan, per NBC Bay Area.

The 60-year-old male driver of the Jeep was killed as well. The driver of the sedan was also pronounced dead at the scene, the San Diego County Department of the Medical Examiner said. Another passenger in the Jeep survived.

According to a San Diego County Department of the Medical Examiner press release, a preliminary investigation determined that the women and the vehicle’s driver had been “traveling westbound on State Route 76 west of Horse Ranch Creek Road in Fallbrook.”

“For unknown reasons, the Jeep collided with a Chrysler sedan [traveling] eastbound on the same roadway,” the release said. “The driver of the sedan [was] also pronounced on scene.”

While only Wood was identified in the press release, multiple social media posts that followed confirmed that the collision claimed the lives of both women.

“​​Peggy Moore & Hope Wood were remarkable women who dedicated their lives to equality & justice,” U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee wrote in a tweet on Tuesday, May 14.

“Their values brought them together & are the legacy they leave behind. Their family & friends are hurting, but we must remember we are all connected through the work they did every day,” Lee, 77, continued.

Lee's post included photos from a memorial set up to honor Moore and Hope.

Wood and Moore met while campaigning in 2008 for Obama. They later founded Hope Action Change, an organizational development consultancy and coaching firm that focused on diversity, according to the company's website.

“We are shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of Peggy Moore and her wife Hope Wood. Peggy was an unrelenting political leader, community advocate, and friend to Alice,” the Alice B Toklas LGBTQ Democratic Club wrote in a tribute to the couple.

“Her leadership on LGBTQ+ issues has made our community stronger. She will always be remembered for her dedication to democratic values, unmatched organizing skills, and affable nature. We extend our support, condolences, and well wishes to Peggy and Hope's family and friends during this difficult time,” the group's post concluded.

Moore also ran former Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf's 2014 election campaign. She then worked in Schaff’s office from 2015 through 2017, according to her LinkedIn profile.

"You could not walk anywhere with Peggy without it taking two hours,” Schaaf told local outlet KRON 4. “She knew every person. For her, politics was deeply personal. It was about connecting through our differences. to lift up our shared hopes and just love.”

Moore also worked as a senior consultant on Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton's campaign and served as the political director for Hilary Clinton's presidential primary campaign in California.
