Petra Pardi’s second season at the helm of Sun Devil Water Polo consisted of breaking records, memories being made, and forming the program's future with a balance of youth and experience that shaped the successful 2024 season. Let’s recap the season highlighting plenty of positives to carry into 2025.
Let’s Review:
Sun Devil Water Polo had their second winningest season in their 23rd year of existence, going 23-8 after starting out 11-1 which is the third-best start in program history. The Sun Devils managed 12 wins over ranked opponents in 2024 and increased their win total by 12 games from the 2023 season.
SUN DEVIL WATER POLO MOST WINS:
2013: 26-7
2012: 26-6
2024: 23-8
2016: 21-8 (NCAA)
2008: 21-13
2017: 20-7
2003: 20-18
Among the 23 wins, two victories came against top-10 competition early in the season with a last-second 12-11 victory to then-No. 9 UC San Diego in the Triton Invitational and then finishing fifth for the week with a 10-8 win over then-No.10 Michigan. The impressive performance against top competition vaulted the Sun Devils into the top 10 nationally, reaching as high as No. 7 in the CWPA ranking and remaining inside the top 10 for the rest of the year.
Throughout the season, the maroon & gold had two six-game winning streaks at different points of the year, including six wins over ranked opponents. The Sun Devils continued their winning ways in conference play over San Jose State, winning their 11th straight over the Spartans and defeating Indiana in both matchups this year. Including a 10-8 win in the MPSF tournament over the Hoosiers.
Lastly, for the first time in program history, senior Luca Petovary was named MPSF’s Player of the Year, the second major award winner in program history, and the first time a Sun Devil has won the honor. But it wouldn’t be the only history she would make this season.
