Former Dodgers Pitcher Julio Urías Can Resume Playing Career in Mexico or Japan: Report
Julio Urías’ pitching career might not be over yet.
The disgraced former Dodger, who hasn’t pitched since his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers ended with his domestic violence arrest last year, has a chance to continue his playing career in a foreign country as long as he meets certain conditions, according to Fernando Ballesteros of PuroBeisbol.mx.
Earlier this month, Urías was sentenced to 36 months of summary probation and was required to complete 30 days of community labor. He also was ordered to complete a 52-week domestic violence counseling course and pay a domestic violence fund fee.
Ballesteros interviewed Los Angeles attorney Edgardo Quintanilla, who outlined the parameters of Urías’ potential return to professional baseball. The 27-year-old might not choose to pitch abroad during the 2024 season, according to the report, because leaving the United States within six months would allow authorities to assume Urías no longer intends to live in the country.
As for next year, Quintanilla believes that as long as Urías completes his domestic violence counseling and behaves according to the law (ostensibly meeting the terms of his probation), he should not face any impediments receiving permission to pitch in foreign professional leagues such as Mexico or Japan.
The report claims that in Mexico, Urías’ country of birth, “the majority of the people think that Urías cannot leave the U.S. to work in another professional baseball league.”
Major League Baseball has yet to impose discipline on Urías. When it does, he could become the first player suspended twice under the league’s domestic violence policy. He is currently a free agent.
