RR vs PBKS: Captain Sam Curran ‘played for pride’ before leaving to England

The 65th match for IPL 2024 was held at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati, between Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals.

The match was a testament of how much RR has deteriorated in form, through the IPL season, especially after their 4th consecutive loss.

Rajasthan Royals won the toss and opted to bat, and scored 144/9. PBKS succeeded in scoring 145 and winning the match. Punjab Kings is at the 9th spot on the 10-team points table, while RR retains its spot at number 2.

“Had a lot of pride to play for” said Curran

Speaking out, in the post-match segment, the young captain of PBKS, Sam Curran expressed the team’s happiness after today’s victory. He also praised the team’s bowling in today’s match.

For the PBKS bowlers, restricting the Royals to 144 was an excellent effort, even as the pitch was on the slower side. Especially when IPL 2024 has seen a lot of 200 scorer matches.

Curran appreciated the team’s bowlers and said that the team had played for ‘pride’.

“We bowled really well as a group. Message was that we had a lot of pride to play for.” Curran was quoted saying.

“Ellis was absolutely amazing in his first game of the season. Probably should’ve played him earlier. When I went in, Jonny said it was quite tough. It was holding a little bit. Didn’t need to take too much risk. Knew on a ground like this, we just needed a couple of sixes.” He added.

Sam and Jonny desert the team mid-season

Sam Curran and Jonny Bairstow are to abandon their IPL team in this season, before the playoffs along with Jos Buttler from Rajasthan Royals.

In a bold move, the English cricketers are returning to their home country to prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup, citing it as ‘national duty’.

“Me and Jonny are leaving tomorrow. Obviously nice. Have thoroughly enjoyed the season, have enjoyed captaining. Atmosphere around the group has been really good. Excited about the World Cup.” Said Sam Curran.

Looking back at the team’s achievements in hindsight, Curran is hopeful for the future, despite being second to last on the points table. He also appreciated Shashank Singh, Ashutosh Sharma, Harshal Patel and Arshdeep Singh from the team.

“Hindsight is a wonderful thing. We had so many close games. Feel like the team is close to something. Who knows what the future holds. Loads of positives. The chase in Kolkata. The way Shashank Singh has come into the team is amazing. Ashutosh as well. Harshal and Arshdeep have bowled well.” Curran added.
