Darren Bent says £27m Unai Emery signing would actually get into Arsenal’s Invincibles team

Darren Bent has named the current Arsenal star who he believes would get into the Invincibles side, claiming that he would pick him ahead of a ‘brilliant’ member of that team.

Arsenal go into the final day of this season still with a chance of winning the Premier League title; for what would be their first since 2004.

Of course, the team which won that title was arguably the greatest the Premier League has seen, with Arsene Wenger overseeing a campaign in which his side won 26 games, drew 12 – and lost none.

This current squad holds a special place in the hearts of many long-suffering Arsenal fans, and perhaps the jewel in the crown has emerged as William Saliba.

Darren Bent thinks William Saliba would get into Invincibles team

Saliba has arguably been the best defender in the Premier League this term, despite missing out on a nomination for the Player of the Season award. The Gunners have conceded just 28 goals in 37 games so far.

And speaking on talkSPORT, Darren Bent suggested that he would pick Saliba in the Invincibles side ahead of Kolo Toure.

“I think I’m going to go with Sol Campbell and Saliba,” he said. “Now, Toure was brilliant by the way. Their partnership was hard to play against by the way, I remember playing against them, trying to run in behind both of them, like two whippets. But I’d go Saliba.”

Arsenal fans may not be seeing best of Frenchman this season

In fairness to Toure, he was probably one or two years away from his peak for the Gunners when that side went on to win the title. It is scary to think that that team could have been even more formidable.

But Saliba has the potential to be one of the best centre-backs the Premier League has had. He is already proving to be an outstanding performer on a consistent basis and he is only 23 years of age.

Crucially, Saliba also has a player alongside him in Gabriel Magalhaes who could be there for years to come, so that partnership could get even stronger.

Certainly, pound for pound, you have to say that the £27 million fee which brought Saliba to the Emirates during Unai Emery’s tenure has to go down as one of the best pieces of business Arsenal have done in the years since the Invincibles.
