In CRE Future Leaders, Illinois Real Estate Journal profiles the young professionals who are making a difference in the commercial real estate industry. This time, we look at the thriving career of Sara Schwer, leasing consultant for residential management services with Chicago’s Draper and Kramer, Incorporated.
What brought you to the Chicago area?
Sara Schwer: I grew up in Indianapolis and lived there my whole life with my parents and my older sister. I went to Indiana University and have always loved growing up in Indiana. I imagine I’ll go back someday. However, I decided to move to Chicago after college to see something besides the usual Hoosier landscape! I’ve also fallen in love with Chicago. It is so much fun and feels like home.
Have you benefited from mentors while starting your career in commercial real estate?
Schwer: I’ve had two mentors in my time working in the CRE industry. First, there is Dan Spector, my first boss. He really pushed me to my potential and helped me learn how to work efficiently and professionally with clients. He gave me the ultimate crash course in Chicago apartment leasing. Dan was an incredible person to learn from since he’s been in the business for a long time and demands your best.
Then there is Mindy Sanchez, my current boss. I think Mindy is the exact type of boss I needed after I finished working with Dan. She has a completely different approach to teaching and mentorship and her approach is exactly what I’ve been looking for. Mindy is understanding, intelligent and is always able to help when asked. She has taught me how to lease at an apartment complex, how to sell clients on our building and how to professionally answer any and all questions. She is always there for us in the Leasing Office.
What is a typical day on the job?
Schwer: An average day of work consists of a few things: touring apartments with clients, completing lead calls/follow-ups, assisting residents of the building and working on applications/upcoming leases. Each day I’ll usually have an average of three tours or so (sometimes more, sometimes less) that are always first priority. Each touring individual is treated the same, given the same information about the building, but shown apartments catered to their desires and preferences. Each client is a potential new resident, and I always go into every tour with a smile and positive attitude.
When I’m not touring with a client, we have a CRM Queue that we go through daily to follow up with interested prospects or clients that have already toured with us. With application screenings, we spend a lot of time making sure all the information we receive is accurate and valid. Every resident at our building must meet the credit/background and income-qualifying requirements to live in the building, so each application screening must take a bit of our attention.
Where do you see yourself in the future?
Schwer: In the future, I see myself continuing to grow my career with Draper and Kramer. I love it here and strive to be as successful as possible.
What do you like to do when not working?
Schwer: Away from the office, I love to go out with my friends around Chicago and spend time with my boyfriend, JB, and our adorable dog, Mozzie. I’m also a complete horror junkie, so I love to watch as many scary movies as I can.
