Injury Woes: England’s Summer Plans Hit as Josh Tongue Ruled Out Indefinitely

England’s plans for the upcoming home summer have been dealt a blow with pacer Josh Tongue ruled out due to a pectoral injury setback. Tongue, 26, has been sidelined since August and there is currently no timescale for his return.

The England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) stated: “Josh has had a setback to his original injury. There is no timescale on when he’ll return to action.”

This setback complicates England’s succession plans for veteran seamer James Anderson, who will retire after the first Test against the West Indies at Lord’s starting July 10. Tongue, who made an impressive Test debut against Ireland last June and played in the subsequent Ashes series, was expected to be a key part of England‘s bowling attack.

With Stuart Broad also having retired last year, England will rely on experienced bowlers Mark Wood and Ollie Robinson, along with Matthew Potts and Gus Atkinson, to fill the void. England’s home summer includes six Tests, with three matches against the West Indies and three against Sri Lanka.

Tongue’s versatility and ability to bowl both with the new ball and as an aggressor had impressed captain Ben Stokes, making his absence a significant loss for the team as they prepare to host Pakistan, West Indies, Sri Lanka, and Australia this season.
