Bulldog Alumnus Doug Barron Wins The Regions Tradition

May 17, 2024 | Men's Golf

Hoover, Ala. – Mississippi State men's golf alumnus Doug Barron earned his first career PGA Tour Champions major title on Sunday, winning the Regions Tradition with a 17-under 271 over four rounds.

Barron, a letterwinner for MSU who graduated in 1992, handled the course in Hoover, Alabama, with ease, finishing with a two-stroke lead to earn his third victory on the PGA Tour Champions. Barron's first and third rounds were his strongest, as he tore up the course to shoot 7-under and 6-under respectively. His opening round 7-under 65 was bogey-free and tied for the best round of the week. Barron also played bogey-free golf over his final 33 holes of the week to earn his first victory since 2021.

"It was an emotional day because I didn't have my best stuff," Barron said. "Between Stricker, Padraig and Ernie, I didn't know what to expect. I figured someone would shoot nine-under and Steven Alker, of course, did it as he usually does. I made pars and was stroking it good. I really got my putter going, and I felt like I could make an eight-footer again and it was huge. Today was just a dream come true to beat all these great players."

With the win, the Memphis, Tennessee native also jumped up to No. 5 in the Schwab Cup standings, the official tour rankings for the PGA Tour Champions. At Mississippi State, Barron was a member of the 1990-91 team, the same team that became the first group of Bulldogs to ever reach the NCAA Championship.

"When I came out here I dreamed of winning majors," Barron continued. "I was never a factor in a major on the PGA TOUR, so it really is a dream come true."
