Aston Villa open talks to re-sign Ross Barkley – sources

Aston Villa have opened talks to re-sign Ross Barkley from Luton Town, sources have told Football Insider.

Unai Emery has given the green light to the pursuit of the 30-year-old midfielder following Luton’s relegation from the top flight.

Barkley wants to remain in the Premier League after an outstanding campaign with Luton, while Villa are keen to strengthen their squad in preparation for Champions League football.

Villa are working on a deal to win the race for Barkley but face competition from rival Premier League clubs.

The Luton midfielder has reignited his career at Kenilworth Road and his performances saw him sweep the board at the club’s Player of the Year awards.

After recording five goals and four assists in 32 Premier League games for Luton, playing in a deeper role, top clubs in England are monitoring his availability.

Barkley spent the 2020-21 season on loan at Villa Park from Chelsea.

Having arrived at Kenilworth Road on a free transfer last summer, Luton boss Rob Edwards has been cagey over the midfielder’s future in recent press conferences.

Publicly, Luton have divulged no information over the length of Barkley’s contract.

Villa’s outstanding season saw them qualify for the Champions League, and Emery is now keen to bolster his squad ahead of a tricky European campaign.

Football Insider revealed on 15 May that Villa are prioritising the midfield as one of three positions for investment over the summer window.
