Manchester United have a new top goalscorer for the season after a return to form from Rasmus Hojlund.

Denmark international Rasmus Hojlund scored Manchester United’s second goal in a 2-0 away victory over Brighton and Hove Albion.

Hojlund was left on the bench for the second game in a row with Erik ten Hag resting him ahead of the FA Cup Final.

It wasn’t a complete rest, with Hojlund brought off the bench in the second half at Brighton, and just like he did against Newcastle, he managed to get on the scoresheet.

Rasmus Hojlund overtakes Fernandes as top scorer

A surge of goals from Rasmus Hojlund in the new years saw him establish himself as Manchester United’s leading goalscorer.

But then an injury and a lean spell saw Bruno Fernandes climb above his tally of 14 goals, moving onto 15 strikes of his own.

Now after two goals in back to back games, Rasmus Hojlund has increased his tally to 16 goals for 2023/24.

Heading into the Brighton game he was level with Fernandes on 15. Now he is out on his own as United’s top scorer.

It’s a long way short of the 30 from Marcus Rashford last season, but the England forward has himself taken a big backwards step.

Hojlund still has one more game left in which he can increase his tally, while Fernandes also has a chance to finish as United’s top scorer.

So long as one of them does the business against City next week, nobody will mind, so long as United win the trophy.
