Ange Postecoglou: I won’t smile until Tottenham reach my goals

Australian enjoyed debut campaign but looking for more

Ange Postecoglou

Ange Postecoglou says he enjoyed his first year in English football but won’t be smiling until Tottenham have reached his ‘lofty ambitions.’

The 58-year-old former Celtic boss says he knew it wouldn’t be a smooth process, taking over a big club in the challenging Premier League but added: “I have enjoyed it and I am looking to push on on from here.”

“Taking over a big club that didn’t have a great year last year, you understand it isn’t going to run smoothly. I have enjoyed the whole season. I have got some lofty ambitions for the football club and, until we reach that point, I am not going to be smiling too much.”

Spurs missed out on a Champions League spot by two points after a run of five defeats in six matches preceded Sunday’s 3-0 win at Sheffield United, which did at least secure fifth-place and Europa League football from a season which saw them lose talisman Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.

“I’m obviously not delighted with the way we finished the season,” Postecoglou added, “but, in fairness to the players and staff, we have been in the top five all season, in a year where there was a fair bit of upheaval.

“We finished eighth last year – with player turnover, different football and a different way of training, it is not easy to maintain a level when you are trying to do that.

“Even in our tough periods this year, we have still been competitive for the most part. I think I have got maximum effort, which is all a manager can ask for.”
