Simone Biles is once again defending her husband, NFL player Jonathan Owens, from people who are still mocking him for saying he didn’t know who she was before dating her. On Sunday, Biles took to Instagram to make it clear that she isn’t interested in hearing any more commentary about Owens or her marriage.
“I’m going to quickly address this, the joke was never a joke! Y’all are blatantly being disrespectful to my relationship & my husband,” Biles wrote in her Instagram Stories. “So I’m gonna go ahead and say this one time. Respectfully, fuck off & if you keep commenting or tweeting at me I’m just going to block you. Simple as that.” Owens, a safety for the Bears, reshared Biles’s story, adding that “Being fake mad about people y’all don’t know from a can of paint is weirdo behavior.”
The couple’s posts came a few hours after Biles shared a photo of herself kissing Owens at Saturday’s Core Hydration Classic, which she won. She captioned the photo: “My whole heart. The best supporter, I couldn’t ask for a better husband.” Videos of the meet show Owens cheering for Biles, seemingly keeping track of her scores with a pen and paper — which prompted jokes on X about whether Owens knew Biles and that broadcasters needed to clarify who he was.
The whole saga started after Owens told The Pivot podcast in December that he didn’t know who Biles — the most decorated gymnast in history — was before meeting her. He also claimed he was the catch in the relationship, prompting uproar online. In April Biles said that though she thought the response was “hilarious at first,” she soon found it hurtful, saying, “One night I broke down and I’m like, ‘Why are you guys talking about my husband like this? You don’t know him.’” Fortunately for Biles, she’s got bigger things to focus on than what the internet thinks of her marriage, like the Paris Olympics.
