Police are investigating a deadly shooting after a 33-year-old man and a young child were wounded by gunfire inside a vehicle in a Dallas neighborhood Sunday night.

Officers responded to the 400 block of Alcorn Avenue around 8:30 p.m. on May 19 after reports of a shooting in the area.

According to the Dallas Police Department, officers soon arrived and found two adults and two children inside a white Dodge Ram pickup truck.

One adult and one child were suffering from gunshot wounds. Dallas police said the pickup truck driver and the other child were not injured in the shooting.

Jose Garnados-Cerritos, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 12-year-old boy was rushed to a local hospital for medical treatment. The family said doctors informed them the child could lose his arm but that it was a miracle he was alive.

Homicide investigators said the group of people were shot at in the 600 block of Jonelle Avenue, and the driver quickly left the area before heading home on Alcorn Avenue.

On Tuesday, Mario Méndez-Cerritos spoke with NBC 5 reporter Alicia Barrera and told her his brother called to tell him his truck had been shot.

The family said Jose Garnados-Cerritos emigrated from Mexico less than a year ago, and now, they have to send his body back to his native country, where his wife and four children wait to say their final goodbyes.
