The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has again charged judicial officers to ensure that justice and equity prevails at all times and in all situations.
Ariwoola made the plea Monday while delivering a keynote address to officially declare open induction course for newly appointed magistrates and judges of the lower court in Abuja.
The theme for this year’s induction is: “Repositioning the Courts for Better Justice Delivery.”
Represented by Justice ML Garba of the Supreme Court, the CJN reminded them that they are joining the bench at a time when several notable reforms are being made and numerous challenges facing the sector.
Ariwoola added: “I am well aware that the terrain in which you now find yourselves as newly appointed magistrates and judges of the lower courts is an unfamiliar one.
“From here on out, you will be expected to handle numerous cases, most of which will present certain ethical dilemmas that requires you to make sensitive and difficult decisions.
“Consequently, there is no gainsaying the fact that your new offices invariably demand a good grasp and understanding of substantive and procedural law and other ethical considerations all of which are crucial to the effective performance of your duties.”
The CJN charged them further: “The induction course which is a recurring programme of the institute is organised to provide you with the much needed guidance and support to enable you succeed in your new assignment.
While giving a welcome address earlier, the administrator of the National Judicial Institute (NJI), Justice Salish Garba, tasked the judges to remain very steadfast by staying the course on the side of fairness and integrity.
