What Liverpool crowd hilariously thought Jurgen Klopp was singing during Arne Slot chant

Liverpool have now officially entered a new era after Jurgen Klopp passed the torch to Arne Slot.

It has been well-documented for a while that the Feyenoord coach will take over, but Liverpool had their own unique way of announcing it.

Liverpool’s final game of the 2023/24 Premier League season at Anfield, which was Jurgen Klopp’s final bow, resulted in the team securing a 2-0 win over Wolves.

It was the perfect send-off for their legendary manager because he departed with three points and an amazing send-off.

As you can imagine, after the game, emotions were high as the fans, players and their families gathered around to express their gratitude towards the German.

During Klopp’s near-decade stay on Merseyside, one of the great things he has done is handle the media and the players to a high standard.

And that proved to be the case when he started the Arne Slot chant whilst talking to the fans on the pitch.

The crowd started to sing along, but did they actually realise he was saying the name of their new manager?

According to Kelly Cates, daughter of club legend Kenny Dalglish, that wasn’t the case because ‘nobody realised what he was singing’, as she told Premier League Productions (20/05/24 at 2:45 pm).

The experienced presenter was inside the ground, alongside Jamie Carragher, covering the game for Sky Sports.

She has claimed that some parts of the crowd thought Klopp was singing ‘Ulla Klopp’, who is his wife, whilst others thought he was just singing his own name.

“There are a couple of things about that, one is that the PA system wasn’t great at Anfield and nobody realised that’s what he was singing,” said Cates.

“Maybe a couple of people realised that he said Arne Slot. A few of them thought he was saying Ulla Klopp, which is his wife and they were singing along with that.

“But most people thought he had just started his own song. Jurgen Klopp. It wasn’t quite as effusive and welcome to the club for Arne Slot as maybe it was. The fact that he tried to do that was a mark of that continuity.”

Arne Slot’s Liverpool task

What a job he has on his hands. Usually, when Liverpool managers are appointed, they are tasked with trying to end the club’s long wait to become champions of England.

But, for the first time in over 30 years, a new manager is coming in without the cloud of the club not winning the title in so long.

That comes with its own pressures, added to the fact that Klopp won the lot on Merseyside.

But with Slot not yet in the building, there is already talk of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future and the future of Saudi Arabia-linked, Mohamed Salah.
