However, Colombo Strikers exercised their right to match Galle’s bid, ultimately securing Pathirana for the record-breaking sum of US$ 120,000.

This acquisition shattered the previous record held by Dilshan Madushanka, who was the most expensive signing in the tournament’s history when he was bought by Jaffna Kings for US$ 92,000 in the 2023 auction. Pathirana’s record-breaking sale highlights his rising star in the cricket world and sets an exciting precedent for the upcoming season of the Sri Lanka Premier League.

Pathirana’s IPL Glory and T20 World Cup Determination: 

Matheesha Pathirana is an excellent bowler who came to the global stage for his excellence in the IPL. In 2022, he made his IPL debut and there was no look back after that, donning the yellow jersey, he is unstoppable. The young bowler from Kandy showcased his excellence this season too. He shone in the 2024 IPL season, playing 6 matches and taking 13 wickets for 169 runs with an impressive average of 13.00 and an economy of 7.68. His standout performance was 4/28, earning him a 4-wicket haul.

After showcasing the excellence, he has been named in Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup squad. After the Asia Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup, he is once again ready to represent his country.
