Recently, we covered the Portuguese media celebrating Burnley’s potential promotion to the Premier League for next season.

That’s not because Portuguese newspapers are particularly fans of the Lancashire club, but more related to the future of Marcus Edwards. The attacker became persona non grata at Sporting CP earlier this season after being late for a gathering and other associated issues.

That saw Sporting banish Edwards from their squad and he was eventually loaned to Burnley with a €10m buying clause which would become compulsory upon promotion. Tottenham are due 35% of the fee, something which had been largely overlooked by the Portuguese media.

Tottenham allowed Edwards to join Vitória de Guimarães in 2019, with Spurs keeping a large percentage of a sale. When Edwards then moved to Sporting, Tottenham agreed to roll that percentage forward so the transfer was easier for the Lisbon club to afford.

Following that, Tottenham reduced their percentage to 35% as part of negotiations for Pedro Porro’s move.

O Jogo now confirm the figures as we earlier explained them, as long as Burnley don’t throw their promotion chances away, there’s an ‘imminent’ €10m due.

Of which, €3.5m will go to Tottenham. That’s not the largest sum in the scheme of things, but will be counted as pure profit.
